Concertina wire, razor wire and barbed wire are often used interchangeably in conversation, but they are three different products with very different security performance. Choosing the wrong one wastes budget or leaves a perimeter under-protected.
Barbed wire is the oldest and simplest form. It is made from two galvanised steel wires twisted together, with sharp barbs clipped on at regular intervals. It is inexpensive and easy to install, but it offers the lowest deterrence. Barbed wire is best suited to agricultural boundaries, cattle control and low-risk property demarcation rather than serious security.
Razor wire is a step up. It is made from a central high-tensile core wire wrapped with a galvanised or stainless steel barbed tape that carries sharp, blade-like barbs. Razor wire can be supplied as straight lengths or in coils and delivers a much stronger physical and psychological deterrent than barbed wire. It is commonly used on wall tops, boundary fences and industrial perimeters.
Concertina wire is razor barbed tape formed into large helical coils that expand and contract like a concertina. The coils are clipped together at intervals so that, once deployed, the barrier resists being pulled apart or compressed. Concertina wire delivers the highest deterrence of the three and is the standard choice for high-security perimeters: defence installations, airports, prisons, power plants, substations, oil and gas facilities, warehouses and international borders.
As a rule of thumb: use barbed wire for boundaries, razor wire for property and industrial security, and concertina wire for high-security perimeters where intrusion must be actively prevented. Many sites combine them, for example a welded mesh or chain link fence topped with concertina coils.
Auroguard manufactures barbed wire, razor wire and concertina wire in galvanised and stainless steel, in the blade profiles and coil diameters your project specifies. Share your perimeter length, wall or fence height and the security level you need, and our desk will recommend the right configuration and quote it factory-direct.
