When you procure concertina or razor wire, the specification comes down to three things: the blade profile, the coil diameter, and the core and coating material. Understanding the codes helps you specify a barrier that matches the threat level without overpaying.

Blade profile is described by codes such as BTO and CBT. BTO stands for Barbed Tape Obstacle. The number after it is the approximate barb length in millimetres, so BTO-22 has a 22 mm barb and BTO-30 has a longer, more aggressive 30 mm barb. CBT stands for Concertina (or Cross) Barbed Tape, with CBT-60 and CBT-65 carrying long, sharp, closely spaced blades that offer the highest deterrence. Larger and sharper blades mean a stronger physical and visual deterrent.

Coil diameter determines how much of a barrier each coil forms. Common concertina coil diameters are 450, 500, 600, 700, 730, 900 and 980 mm. A larger coil covers more area per running metre and is harder to breach, while a smaller coil is used for wall-top applications where space is limited. The number of loops per coil, typically between 33 and 56, controls how far the coil stretches when deployed.

Material and coating decide how long the barrier survives outdoors. The core wire is usually 2.5 mm high-tensile steel and the barbed tape is around 0.5 mm thick. For most Indian conditions, hot-dip galvanised steel gives good corrosion resistance; for coastal, marine or highly corrosive environments, stainless steel grade 304 or 316 is specified. Higher zinc coating mass extends service life in humid and saline air.

A complete concertina wire specification should state: blade profile (for example BTO-22 or CBT-65), coil diameter, number of loops or clips per coil, core wire diameter, tape thickness, and coating type. Getting these right ensures the barrier passes inspection and performs for its intended life.

Auroguard manufactures concertina and razor wire across all standard blade profiles and coil diameters, in galvanised and stainless steel. Send us your security level, mounting method (wall top, fence line or ground coil) and environment, and we will specify and quote the correct product for your site.
