Chain link fencing and welded wire mesh are the two most common fencing meshes in India, and buyers frequently ask which one to use. Both are made from galvanised or PVC-coated steel wire, but they are manufactured differently and suit different jobs.
Chain link fencing is woven from a single continuous wire bent into a diamond pattern and hooked together. Because the wire is woven rather than fixed, the fabric is flexible, absorbs impact, and follows uneven ground easily. It is economical, quick to install over long runs, and ideal for boundary walls, playgrounds, agricultural plots, industrial compounds and large perimeters where cost per metre matters most.
Welded wire mesh is made by spot-welding straight horizontal and vertical wires at every intersection, creating a rigid square or rectangular grid. The welded joints make the panel stronger, flatter and more tamper-resistant than woven chain link. It gives a cleaner, more architectural appearance and is preferred for security fencing, boundary panels, factory perimeters, substations, railways and premium residential or commercial projects.
On cost, chain link is generally cheaper per running metre and faster to install over long distances. Welded mesh costs more but delivers higher rigidity, better security and a neater finish. On maintenance, both perform well when galvanised or PVC coated; welded mesh panels are easier to inspect and replace individually.
As a guide: choose chain link for long, cost-sensitive boundaries and uneven terrain, and choose welded wire mesh where security, rigidity and appearance matter. For high-security sites, either can be topped with concertina or razor wire for additional deterrence.
