Containment level is the single most important performance property of a crash barrier. It describes how large and fast a vehicle the barrier can safely stop and redirect during a real impact. Specifying too low a class leaves a hazard; specifying too high wastes budget. Understanding the frameworks helps you get it right.
Containment levels are set by full-scale crash testing under recognised standards. In India, IRC: 119 (Guidelines on Traffic Safety Barriers) and MoRTH Specifications govern the requirement, and they draw on international test frameworks. The two most cited frameworks worldwide are EN 1317 (European) and NCHRP-350 / MASH (United States).
Under EN 1317, containment rises from normal classes such as N1 and N2 (passenger cars at lower energy) through higher classes H1, H2, H3 and H4 (buses and heavy goods vehicles at increasing energy). Under the US MASH and older NCHRP-350 systems, performance is graded as Test Levels TL-1 to TL-6, where TL-2 and TL-3 cover cars and light trucks and TL-4 to TL-6 cover progressively heavier trucks and tankers.
How to choose in practice: low-energy locations such as urban roads and gentle medians need only lower containment; divided national highways with mixed traffic typically need a mid-level class; and high-risk locations such as bridge parapets, hill roads with steep drops, sharp curves and expressways with heavy commercial vehicle traffic need high containment, which usually means a Thrie Beam or rigid concrete barrier rather than a standard W Beam.
Because exact class names and acceptance criteria differ between IRC revisions, tender documents and consultant specifications, always confirm the required containment class against the current project tender and the latest IRC: 119 revision before ordering. The right barrier at the right location is a safety and liability decision, not just a cost decision.
Auroguard manufactures W Beam, Thrie Beam and Metal Beam crash barriers to the containment requirements written into NHAI, MoRTH and state PWD tenders, with test documentation supplied for compliance. Share your project location, alignment and traffic mix and our desk will help you match the barrier to the required containment class.
