Geosynthetics is an umbrella term that covers several very different products. The four most common on Indian civil and highway projects are geotextile, geogrid, geocell and geomembrane. They look related but each solves a distinct engineering problem, and using the wrong one is a common and costly mistake.
Geotextile is a permeable fabric, woven or non-woven, made from polypropylene or polyester. Its core functions are separation, filtration and drainage. Placed between soft subgrade and granular fill, it stops the two layers from mixing while letting water pass through. It is the workhorse of road subbase, embankments, drainage layers and erosion control behind retaining walls.
Geogrid is a stiff polymer grid with large apertures, designed for reinforcement. Soil particles interlock through the openings, so the grid carries tensile load the soil cannot. Geogrid is used to reinforce weak subgrades, build steeper reinforced-soil slopes and retaining walls, and reduce pavement thickness by spreading load. Where geotextile separates and filters, geogrid reinforces and stiffens.
Geocell is a three-dimensional honeycomb structure, usually HDPE, that is expanded on site and filled with soil, sand or aggregate. The cell walls confine the fill, dramatically increasing its load-bearing capacity. Geocell is ideal for stabilising very soft soils, building access roads over weak ground, protecting slopes and lining channels.
Geomembrane is the opposite of geotextile: it is an impermeable barrier, typically HDPE or bituminous, used for containment. Its job is to stop liquid moving through it. Geomembrane lines landfills, ponds, canals, tunnels and basement structures to prevent leakage and seepage.
A simple way to remember it: geotextile lets water through while separating layers, geogrid reinforces and stiffens soil, geocell confines fill to spread load, and geomembrane blocks water completely. Many projects use several together, for example a geotextile filter beneath a geomembrane liner.
